In my experience, the subtleties of planetary movements can have a variety of effects on our current condition and here is what I have observed and been taught about mercury retro grade. It is not inherently a bad thing, but it CAN be a bad thing with the wrong intentions. Mercury in retrograde calms the interstellar electromagnetic winds that bombard our planet from the sun. In energetic terms this facilitates an environment in which internal processes and personal issues can be worked upon with less than usual intensity from other astrological influences. Thus, it is beneficial to use this time for internal reflection, personal growth, and planning / contemplating decision making, because we are exposed to less intense energy from our astrological neighbors and we can listen more closely to our connection with mother Earth and sister moon. If we fail to listen to our internal and spiritual guidance during this time, the effect can be perceived as negative because the Earth and Moon spirit will subtly try and tell us we have something to work on, and their energies are more noticeable with the interstellar calm created by mercury in retro.

None of my astrology teachers has ever said that “much of Western Astrology was ultimately derived from Vedic Astrology.” What’s your evidence for that claim?

I appreciate your article and I agree that exploiting people’s fears to profit is troubling and disheartening (in reference to the Mercury Retrograde Protection Kit) . But I disagree with you that these gems are only “pretty” but totally useless. Gems, crystals & minerals are very powerful and have great potential for healing and protection…so that came across as a smug comment on your part. Considering the use of crystals and minerals are as ancient and significant as the use of Astrology.
